Flora and fauna
Baldiachi, the Italian botanist, characterized the nature of Montenegro as "poetic and pathetic", meaning poetry of its variety and pathetics of contrasts. This may be not absolutely usual terminology for the scientist, nevertheless, rather exactly defines the value of Montenegro as ecological treasury of Europe. The country is not large by its size, but rich in species of animals and plants.
In Montenegro there are 40 lakes, 80 % of territory are occupied by woods, natural pastures and meadows. Here, on the territory of only 0,14 % of Europe, grow 2833 varieties of plants that makes almost a quarter of species of the European flora.
The structure of flora of this country always surprised both local, and foreign biologists. In Montenegro alongside with the local botanists Panich, Adamovich, Kazanin many well-known botanists from other countries carried out their researches. In 1929 British botanist Teril had registered there 270 new species of plants, which were relic in the majority.
In the national park “Biogradska Gora” there are trees of 86 species, like fir, silver fir, beech, elm, oak, maple, mountain ash, lime, they are typical representatives of various climatic zones. Except Perucica in Bosnia, in Biogradska Gora, the virgin primeval forest, the only one in its kind in Europe, was preserved (in the natural park of Biogradska Gora there are trees aged 500-1000 years). Even medieval governors of Montenegro understood and estimated originality of those woods and had taken them under protection, thus established a basis of ecological culture of the country.
Rare Alpine edelweiss (Swiss cudweed) grow in Durmitor, Sinjajevina and Prokletije mountains. In the village of Piva, the scientist O.Blau was discovered the plant named a mountain cornflower (mountain bluets). At the beginning of 20-th century a botanist Pantocek in Komovi mountain had discovered two new kinds of violets, one of them the scientist named after Nikola, the king of Montenegro.
When the flora is so various there is nothing surprising, that the fauna of Montenegro is so numerous and rich in species.
The region of Biorgradsko lake is the habitat of deer, fallow-deer, roe, royal eagles. In the water-logged ground (sites) it is possible to see wild boars and bears. In high-mountainous areas shepherds who till now conduct semi-nomadism way of life and herd the cattle for summer in mountains, frequently meet wolves and bears. Sometimes the latter even dare to get into the summer huts of shepherds and shelters for cattle.
The most widespread bird found in Prokletije mountains is the gold eagle.
In Bukumirsko lake, located 1430 meters above sea level, the unusual vertebrate animal - a water lizard is found.
In Montenegro 3/4 species of European avifauna are submitted. In waters of Skadar lake there is the biggest community of birds in Europe. Here it is possible to see colonies of pelicans, cormorants, herons, black ibises. And under a quiet smooth surface of lake on which waters lilies and rare kesorania are swinging, numerous flights of fishes - carps, bleaks, trouts are swimming...
